With over 20 years of experience in nephrology and a strong background in Quality Improvement (QI), Dr. Lambie has been at the forefront of introducing twice-weekly hemodialysis in NHS Highland since 2020. He was the Clinical Director for Medicine for 5 years . He has used the QI skills learned in those roles to deliver improvements in renal services and his research interests include haemodialysis and polycystic kidney disease. He introduced incremental haemodialysis in Inverness in 2020 subsequently promoting it within Scotland and in New Zealand where he recently spent a year on sabbatical and demonstrating significant patient benefits, cost savings, and environmental advantages. Currently all Scottish renal units start at least some of their patients incrementally,
In this session, Dr. Lambie will share the implementation of incremental, twice-weekly hemodialysis for all new patients in NHS Highland since 2020, highlighting initial obstacles, setup challenges, and ongoing complexities, such as scheduling. It also examines the patient, financial, and environmental benefits of having 30-40% of the dialysis population on this regimen. A discussion session will follow to address key issues in depth.
