The climate & nature crisis threatens all aspects of British life from national security to food supply, but solutions exist.
The National Emergency Briefing was commissioned to present the latest evidence, and build an irresistible call for the Government to stage a televised emergency briefing, the essential first step towards the WW2-scale response now required.
Last November, ten of the UK’s leading experts briefed an invited audience of over 1,200 politicians and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and the media.
The briefing set out the implications of climate and nature breakdown for health, food systems, national security and the economy.
A 50-minute film is now taking the message into communities across the UK, and beyond.
Screenings in village halls, cinemas, faith spaces and workplaces are bringing constituents, civic leaders and MPs together to hear the evidence - and consider what an emergency response should look like.
I'm part of a panel hosting one next week actually. 11th June at the Poole Lighthouse. Good luck to everyone else doing this.
I hosted the film at RCPCH conference a few weeks ago.
Last week we heard form Chris Gormley at the Academy of Royal Colleges Net zero group who was present at the live briefing. He was very supportive of us showing it in health organisations. He was clear that he did not feel it was Party Political in anyway. He described the film as "terrifying" but important to share.
I also met Lucy Spiegle this weekend. She has a long history in environmental journalism. She covered the NEB on the day. She described it as "electrifying"!
She also described a feeling of relief she sensed form the audience. I think referring to the fact that many of us know some or most of this and actually getting it out in the open was a huge relief.
As a paediatrician dealing with palliative and EOL care it reminds me of the advanced care planning conversations I have with parents. Whilst incredibly difficult it is often received with relief as well as distress as of course they know!
Even if you are not able to show it in your places of work I would strongly encourage you to attend local showings yourselves and encourage friends and family to go with you. You can contribute to the conversations afterwards from a health perspective which will be very powerful!
Thanks Helena. That's encouraging to hear. Our one has been organised by a local power house called Julia Davies, the organiser of https://wehavethepower.org/. The audience are heads of local businesses, charities etc so we're hoping that with support they'll go back and organise their own viewings. Thank you for your response/advice - fingers crossed.
Julia looks awesome!
Good news! My trust has given me permission to go ahead and show it!
That's quite some leadership from your Trust!
