Abstract
Healthcare contributes significantly to carbon emissions, with surgery among the most resource-intensive areas. Achieving sustainable surgery requires not only top-down solutions but also changes at the staff level. This webinar will explore how behavioural science can be applied to reduce the environmental impact of surgical care without compromising patient outcomes. Drawing on ethnographic research, mixed-methods studies, and real-world case examples from operating theatres, we will unpack the behavioural drivers behind unsustainable practices and discuss how frameworks like the Theoretical Domains Framework and the Behaviour Change Wheel inform the development of targeted interventions. The session will offer practical insights into the design, implementation, and evaluation of behavioural interventions in complex clinical environments, highlighting opportunities, challenges, and lessons for broader health system sustainability efforts.
