📌 Ambient Heat and Acute Kidney Injury

Hear from Prof. Shakoor Hajat on how rising ambient temperatures affect kidney health, and what the evidence means for clinical practice and public health policy.

🎤 Speaker: Shakoor Hajat – Professor of Global Environmental Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Shakoor is Professor of Global Environmental Health and part of the Climate and Health Group which leads climate change and health research at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

He is Director of the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) on Climate Change and Health Security, which undertakes research to inform UK public health policy on climate change in partnership with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), University College London (UCL), and the Met Office.

He is the Primary Investigator of THERM-UK which is a 4 year NERC-funded project quantifying the health benefits from reducing heat exposures through public health, housing policy and nature-based solutions.

He is also Co-Investigator on HEARTH: National hub on net zero, health and extreme heat funded by UKRI and NIHR, which examines how the transition to net zero emissions can benefit vulnerable populations by improving health outcomes, and ARCADE: Accelerating Resilience and Climate Adaptation of Domestic Environments for vulnerable populations, which aims to protect heat-vulnerable populations in the UK by improving resilience within homes.

💬 About the talk

This session characterises the association between ambient heat and acute kidney injury risk, and explores the factors that modify that effect. Shakoor will also touch on what this means for preventing heat-related AKI.
