📌 Small Change, Big Numbers: Reusable Tourniquets and Sustainable Improvement Across a UK Regional Kidney Network
Hear from Alastair Tallis on how a regional kidney network moved nine units towards more sustainable care, using the switch from single use to reusable tourniquets as a worked example of change that saves carbon, money and clinical time.
🎤 Speaker: Alastair Tallis – Project Manager, Midlands Renal Operational Delivery Network
Alastair Tallis is Project Manager for the Midlands Renal Operational Delivery Network, hosted by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, a role he has held since 2022. He leads improvement work across the nine kidney units of the Midlands Kidney Network, spanning chronic kidney disease prevention and the modelling of dialysis capacity and demand. Originally an occupational therapist, he most recently led the network wide switch from single use to reusable tourniquets for haemodialysis, one of a broad portfolio of quality improvement projects he has led across the region.
💬 About the talk
Tourniquets are an everyday part of haemodialysis, and single use versions remain common practice. Across the Midlands, most kidney units were still using them, at a largely avoidable cost in carbon and money.
This session tells the story of changing that across a whole region, and what it took to get there. Expect details about the barriers, how units worked through them, and how patients responded. Alastair will set the project in the wider context of what the network has been doing since 2022, and open the floor to how other regional networks might take similar work forward.
