The Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC), launched in 2019, is a student-led initiative that evaluates how health professional schools integrate planetary health into education. Using clear metrics across five categories, students—supported by faculty—assess their institutions, identify gaps, and work with staff to drive improvements. Results are published annually on Earth Day, tracking progress over time.

Originally created for medical schools, the PHRC now spans over 100 institutions in 15 countries, with pilots for nursing and pharmacy programs underway. Developed with global experts, this adaptable tool aims to inspire action for sustainable healthcare education and a healthier planet.

The Event: This session was the first in a series of events about taking part in the Planetary Health Report Card. Four students from pharmacy and dentistry introduced what the Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC) is, shared their motivation for being involved, and the key lessons they took away from this experience. We hope this gives some insight and encouragement to take part in the PHRC this year!

Speakers:

Jing Yuan Chan: I’m Jing, a final year dental student at King’s College London, and my team and I conducted the PHRC for our university’s Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Craniofacial Sciences (FoDOCS) in 2024-25.

Ellie Pilkington: I’m in my training year for pharmacy at Dorset. I was a co-lead for the PHRC at Keele University and the main contact person for any enquiries. I did the PHRC to understand more about what the university was doing to reduce its impact and the improvements that can be made. I now have an interest in how climate change has an impact on people.

Deepani Vimalrajh: I am a Foundation Dentist who completed the pilot version of the Dentistry PHRC in my fourth year of dental school at King's College London. I co-lead the publication on behalf of the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral and Craniofacial Sciences at King's. My interest to complete the PHRC was motivated by the lectures provided by guest speakers on the environmental impacts of the healthcare industry, and the impact of climate change on health and wellbeing.
