This study from Doncaster Renal Services evaluated reducing haemodialysis machine heat disinfection to once daily, instead of multiple cycles, to save energy and water. The team monitored infection control standards and patient safety while implementing the change, demonstrating that single daily disinfection maintained safety and machine performance.

The initiative achieved significant reductions in resource use and carbon emissions, with cost savings for the service. It highlights how reviewing standard protocols can uncover opportunities for greener practice, offering a replicable model for dialysis units aiming to improve sustainability without compromising care quality.
