Grimsby dialysis unit partnered with Kidney Quality Improvement Partnership (KQIP) and the Trying to Reduce UnNecessary Carbon from Haemodialysis (TRUNC-HD) initiative to cut carbon emissions by encouraging patients to bring their own blankets and cups.
A patient survey showed strong support, and the change reduced blanket orders from 180 to 50 per week and cup use from 200 to 60, saving an estimated 1.4–1.7 tonnes of CO2e annually.
The project highlighted the role of patient involvement in sustainability, overcame initial concerns about cost-cutting, and has gained recognition, with plans to expand across the region and provide patients with welcome packs including a reusable blanket and mug.
