We are using disposable hot/cold packs in maternity as a form of pain relief, I'd like to know what places use as an alternative to disposable items?

Hi Amy, we don't use these at St Mary's in Manchester as far as I am aware. Are they effective for pain and what type of pain?

That's a lot of usage - and cost. We don't have them and are no longer allowed to fill hot water bottles. I am not sure whether this comes from an incident where someone was burned or why that is the 'policy' now. Ice was abandoned a long time ago too.

Thanks Liz. I've never been asked about them as a doctor but I think it's something the midwives give to patients with abdominal pain/back pain/perineal pain. I think we used to use hot water bottles and actually ice but now it's all disposable packs. A midwife told me they can use sometimes up to 10 a day as they only stay hot/cold for about 20mins.
